The Commitment of Mentors & Mentees

Our mentors are 2nd year graduate students who are eager to support the academic and professional development of 1st year graduate students. They make a commitment to meet face-to-face with their mentee at least one hour monthly as well as promptly respond to any questions via email, phone, or in person. Our mentors are committed to the personal  growth of their mentees and find mentoring relationships to be very meaningful experiences.

All WCU Psychology graduate students are more than welcome to participate in this program. We hope that mentees will go on to serve as mentors in their second year at WCU. Whether you are a mentor or a mentee, this looks great on your resume—and it is a proven way to improve your professional development.

During new student orientation each summer, a sign-up list is distributed for all incoming students to inform them of the mentoring program. Interested students should input their information on the home page.  This information will be sent to one the program coordinators, who will match mentors with mentees. We will recruit our mentors during their second semester of study at WCU so that they can be ready to step up as mentors by their 3rd semester (fall of their second year).

At the end of each academic year, mentors and mentees are invited attend a Psychology Graduate Mentoring Program social where they will be given certificates of participation and an opportunity to provide feedback about the program so we can continue to improve.
